Car crash on Express way 1 killed 13 injured

One man was killed and 13 others hurt after a car rammed into a pickup truck carrying workers on an elevated expressway in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district on Saturday.

The pre-dawn crash occurred on the Chalongrat expressway at around 5am, said Pol Lt Col Lapat Thapthim, deputy superintendent at Expressway 1 police station. The incident was reported shortly after. Police and rescue workers rushing to the scene found the damaged Mazda car with Pathum Thani licence plates on the left lane of the expressway.  The driver, identified later as Wathee Changplaipet, 32, had a chest pain and was trapped inside his car. He was retrieved from the vehicle.

About 100 metres from the car, a Toyota pickup truck was found with its rear damaged. Driver Nimit Thamun, 51, sustained minor injuries and a male worker sitting next to him was unconscious. Rescue volunteers immediately gave the unconscious man first aid but he was pronounced dead shortly later, Thai media reported on Saturday. Several workers, both men and women, were scattered on the highway and sustained injuries. All 13 injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Mr Wathee told police that he worked as a salesman at a company in Bangkok. Before the crash, he left the firm’s product sales booth in Silom area and was on the way home in Pathum Thani. When arriving at the scene, he admitted to having dozed off at the wheel. Mr Nimit said he was bringing the workers from Patunam area to a construction site in Sai Mai. While he was driving his pickup truck along the expressway, the car suddenly rammed into the rear of his vehicle.  Source: Bangkok Post
